Prof. Stephen Smith, the founder of ClearSky, will be attending and speaking at the UK Computational Intelligence Workshop 2024 (UKCI 2024). This event will be held in Belfast from September 2-4, 2024. Organized by the Artificial Intelligence Research Centre at the Ulster University School of Computing, UKCI 2024 is supported by the IEEE UK & Ireland Section Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Ireland Chapter and will be collocated with the 8th International Conference on Belief Functions.

Prof. Stephen Smith’s Keynote

Prof. Smith will deliver a keynote address titled “The translation of ‘whitebox’ evolutionary computation to clinical practice”.

His presentation will overview the development and clinical translation of biologically-inspired “white box” machine learning algorithms to support the assessment, differentiation, and monitoring of neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. This work has allowed patients to be monitored with greater accuracy than previously possible both in the hospital clinic and their own homes, leading the way to reducing costs and improving the patient’s quality of life. Two regulatory-compliant and patent-protected devices are now in routine clinical use, having been validated in medical centres worldwide. The interpretable nature of the algorithms developed have helped support three clinical trials for repurposed drugs to slow or even halt progression of Parkinson’s and hold promise for current studies in assessing Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) - often a precursor to Alzheimer’s disease.

AI Application in Healthcare

Following a degree in Computer Science, Prof. Smith has focused his research on applying computer-based technologies to healthcare and biomedicine. His ambition to make this technology available to patients was realised through the creation of the University spin-out company ClearSky Medical Diagnostics Limited.

Led by Prof. Smith, ClearSky combines the expertise of a diverse team of professionals from AI and Machine Learning, consultant clinical neurology, and seasoned pharmaceutical and MedTech industry professionals. ClearSky offers AI/ML services for clinical research and product development in neurodegenerative conditions.
